Live Performance at Ulster University

Journal Entry #1

São Sebastião

Defining the project. This would later change as I developed my idea. The piece São Sebastião was one of the first pieces I wrote for this group with the original aim of transcribing what we played.

Journal Entry #2

Investigating composers in a similar area and how to keep the ensemble engaged and open to new ideas. I met with my lecturers to talk through the project. I also started exploring new ideas for the ensemble.

Learning about Cobra by John Zorn

Journal Entry #5

The realities of running a group are setting in. We managed to work on a couple of pieces. And due to the nature of improv I roped in a drummer in the practice room next door.

We also started adapting the Cobra Mechanics and making our own. I’ve put them in a webpage pack here. Password is iloveimprov

Journal Entry #6

Here is a Dropbox link for our final pieces. Visuals & Lead Sheets included.

At this point, we’ve gone through 9 pieces of music based on visual & text prompts, refining our gestures and recording our workshop recordings. After putting all this work in, we decided it was time to organise a performance. I have included a link to our pieces via Soundcloud below.

Final Journal Entry

Here we are, the end of the line! The final performance is just below.
