Dr Victoria McCollum originally commissioned me to write music and sound design for a brand-new play about the Islandmagee Witches. I was inspired to write this based on the plat, the published graphic novel, and the historical references that Dr Andrew Sneddon and Dr Shannon Devlin provided to try and tell the story within a musical context.
After reading historical records, the graphic novel, and the play, I combined sketches I had made to make sense of the story as part of my master's research project at Ulster University, tackling the development of musical ideas.
This is a work of dark historical fiction, and it should be noted that much of this was made up for storytelling. However, it is based on true events that occurred in the 1700s.
Why is this a demo album? Well, there are a few reasons for that. Firstly, there are so many stories within this story that still haven’t been told. I would like to come back to them over the next few years and hopefully develop the music and story further. Secondly, I had to bring together a lot of elements to produce the music and I can’t thank my friends enough for helping me with this project. Finally, I have done my best with the tools I have and I feel that the story deserves to go into a studio setting. With this in mind, I don’t know when or how it might happen but I hope to bring this project up to the standard it deserves. If you would like to support this project, please let me know!
